Bernard M. "Bernie" O'Brien of Malden, formerly of Melrose, died on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the Massachusetts General Hospital of Boston. He was only 53 years old. Born in South Boston on June 19, 1958, he was the son of Rita O'Brien & the late Bernard G. O'Brien of South Boston. He was raised in Southie and a 1977 graduate of South Boston High School. Mr. O'Brien worked as a printer with Universal Wilde Printing of Westwood for over 30 years and part time with FBS as a private security guard. He was a resident of Melrose for 18 years and Malden for the last 2 years. He was a member of St. Mary's Church of Melrose, loved his family, jet skiing, Lake Winnipesaukee, swimming, scuba diving, Castle Island in Southie, Traveling, the Bahamas, telling stories & jokes, his daily phone calls just to check in with his family & friends, detailing his car, going out socializing & his German Shepherd "Jake." Everyone was a friend to Bernie and he will be greatly missed. He was the devoted husband of the late Noreen E. (Ryan) O'Brien who passed away just months ago. Together they shared 24 years of marriage. He was the loving father of Caitlin E. O'Brien of Malden & Sean P. O'Brien, also of Malden. Cherished son of Rita O'Brien & the late Bernard G. O'Brien of South Boston. Caring brother of Cheryl O'Brien of South Boston, Linda Buckley & her husband Robert of Hanover & Warren O'Brien of South Boston. Dedicated son-in-law of John J. & Honora Ryan of Malden. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces & great nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Saturday, January 21st at 9AM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Mary's Church Herbert St., Melrose at 10AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours Friday from 4-8PM. Interment in Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden. Arrangements by The Gately Funeral Home of Melrose.
